English Department, State University of Surabaya, will host the 5th English Teaching Conference (ETC) 2019 on 16 November 2019. This is an annual national conference in the area of English language teaching (ELT) with this year’s theme of “An Insight into Assessment in Language Teaching”. Some sub-themes under this year’s conference include 1) assessment in systemic functional linguistics (SFL) framework, 2) assessment and critical thinking, 3) assessment in the national curriculum, 4) assessment and students’ needs and 5) assessment with higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and low order thinking skills (LOTS).
ETC 2019 will invite three prominent speakers in the respective field, namely:
Prof. Dr. Susanto (A Professor on Assessment with HOTS, State University of Surabaya)
Dr. Bradley Horn (Director of Regional Language Officers (RELO), US Embassy Jakarta
Besides the main event, there will be two workshops for prospective participants conducted on 26 October 2019 with Ahmad Munir, Ph.D. with the focus of Engaging Assessment with Students’ Needs and the second workshop will be on 2 November 2019 with Dr. Oikurema Purwati with the focus of Development of Written and Spoken Profile for Assessment.

Conference proceeding and potential journal publication
For prospective presenters whose abstract has been accepted by the committee, you're invited to submit your full-paper of your research to be submitted on the conference proceeding (with ISBN) by 16 November 2019. Please download the full-paper template here.
Selected papers will be published on our journal New Language Dimensions Journal published by English Department, State University of Surabaya (for either December 2019 or June 2020 editions).
Berita membanggakan datang dari Tim Debat Bahasa Inggris Unesa meraih Juara III dalam kompetisi debat bahasa Inggris dalam rangakaian “Indonesian Naval Academy English Competition” (INAEC) tahun 2019. INAEC 2019 digelar secara rutin oleh Akademi Angkatan Laut Indonesia, pada 30-31 Agustus 2019 bertempat di Markas Besar Angkatan Laut Bumimoro, Morokrembangan, Kota Surabaya, Jawa Timur.
Tim Debat Bahasa Inggris Unesa kali ini diwakili oleh 3 srikandi mahasiswi Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris, yakni Fizariyah Sukma, Munawaroh Alfianti, dan Shania Sukma Patrianegari Mulyono. Ketiganya adalah tergolong mahasiswi baru angkatan 2018 dan gelar INAEC 2019 ini menjadi gelar kompetisi debat pertama mereka.
Kompetisi debat INAEC 2019 menjadi ajang bagi para debater muda tingkat universitas sebelum terjun di kompetisi debat lainnya yang bersifat lebih terbuka. Semua peserta adalah mahasiswa baru semester 4 dari 21 perguruan tinggi di Indonesia.
English Department, State University of Surabaya, has successfully hosted the 4th English Teaching Conference (ETC) in the early September 2018. The conference is the fourth consecutive national conference, and this is as to show the commitment of the English Department to provide an opportunity for English teachers for academic and professional development program.
The theme carried by ETC 2018 is Empowering English Teachers through Theorizing Practices. Upon this big theme, there have been English teachers, teacher candidates, and students, and also observers of English learning (ETC) have joined and disseminated their ideas or experiences of language teaching practices at all levels and contexts of education.
In this event, the were more than 200 participants and 36 presenters in parallel sessions who shared the results of their research and experiences in the teaching of English. In addition to parallel sessions, this conference has invited three keynote speakers who presented their papers in the panel session, namely 1) Prof. Dr. Mukhlas Samani, M.Pd. (State University of Surabaya, Indonesia) representing policy-makers, 2) Andrzej Cirocki, Ph.D. (The University of York, UK) as an expert in the area of ELT, and 3) Rustiani Widiasih, S.Pd., M.Pd. as a teacher model( SMA Negeri Badegan 1 Ponorogo, Indonesia).
The selected papers from the presenters have been compiled in a conference proceeding which can be downloaded here the-4th-etc-2018-unesa-conference-proceeding.pdf. We do hope through this conference proceeding, there will be further feedback and academic discussion that will generate greater knowledge and contribution to the teaching of English in Indonesia.
